I was introduced to the dances of Universal Peace at Mana by long-time friend Valmaya on returning to Aotearoa from London in 1990. Having experienced circle dances at Findhorn and at St James Church Piccadilly, I was intrigued by the more intimate nature of the Dances of Universal Peace, the co-creative musical experience and the embracing heart-centred atmosphere. Soon I was dancing with the Auckland crowd and somewhat reluctantly shoved into the centre with my guitar and encouraged to lead. With lots of support and mentoring from Linley Main and her community of dancing friends, I was certified in 1993. At this time I led circles in Wellington, Kapiti, Auckland, Whanganui and Hawkes Bay and attended and participated in many dance events.
Since moving to Taupo and starting a family, summer and winter Earthdance were particular highlights, as well as hosting the Aramaic Lord’s Prayer at St Andrews Church Taupo. Travels to Australia and to the Ruhaniat Camp in Mendocino ‘eat, dance and pray’ were wonderful opportunities to connect with friends, mentor Allaudin Ottinger, and meet new beloveds on the path. Attending Dance Camp with my son Jamil was a very rich experience, and participating in Shafia Steven’s first Dance Training in Taupo was a privilege.
I particularly love supporting dance leaders as a drummer and guitarist and passing on these skills. I also love being part of the Sufi community connected with the dances, helping to host events, creating and leading zikr. I am available for mentoring dance leaders.
The Tauhara Centre in Taupo is my local circle and the Dances are integral to this unique community and retreat centre. Local leaders including myself, Catherine and Nasir, embrace others who wish to lead at our monthly Dance circle. Being centrally located, the Tauhara Centre has been blessed with many dancing visitors and wonderful events and we look forward to many more.
